Wire Knotting Techniques

Session One - The Prolong Knot Bracelet

Course description:

A hands-on one-day workshop, to introduce the student to the principles of tying complex knots in precious wire, specifically addressing the Prolong Knot, or Ocean Plat, made into a bracelet. There will be examples and discussion of the use of this knot in several other applications, with demonstrations as time permits. Classes normally run from 9AM to 3PM. May be taken alone, or with the accompanying Turk's-head ring workshop.

Materials:

Participants are provided with a fixture, fine silver wire, and some tools. Some familiarity with wirework and jewelry making is useful, but not essential. It is also helpful, and equally unnecessary, to have some experience with tying knots in other media.

Goals:

By the end of the session, it is anticipated that every participant will have completed a silver bracelet. The workshop will not address the soldering or polishing of the finished piece, but if facilities are present, these can be handled on an ad hoc basis.

Date and Location:

See the schedule.

Class size:

Limited to twelve students.

Costs:

$95.00 -- Credit card, PayPal, or check. Includes one fixture, several feet of fine silver wire, and assorted tooling. Additional materials may be available.

Session Two - The Turk's-head Ring

Course description:

Building on the skills introduced in the first session, specifically addressing the Turk's-head Knot, made into a ring. There will be examples and discussion of the use of this knot in several other applications, with demonstrations as time permits. Beginning mid-afternoon of the first day, or as soon as the Prolong Knot bracelets are completed, the ring size is discussed and the ring-making fixture is introduced. Students leave with the fixture and some instructions for familiarizing themselves with the pattern formed by tying the Turk's-head on it.

Class resumes at 9AM on the second day, with distribution of wire and tools, and students begin work on their rings.

"Advanced" workshops.

Possible variations on the two- and three-dimensional knots, linking knots togehter to form larger pieces, Turk's-head rings used as bezels; special request projects suggested by the students should be addressed in advance, to make sure I have the appropriate materials available.

Costs:

$175.00 -- Credit card, PayPal, or check. Includes one bracelet and one ring fixture, several feet of fine silver wire, and assorted tooling. Additional materials may be available.
For the ring workshop alone, the cost is $120. I recommend taking both, since some techniques taught in the first workshop must be duplicated for those taking the ring workshop alone.
Advanced workshops range from $80 to $100, adjusted for material and tool requirements.
