I've just finished a commission to set several stones, supplied by the customer. At first I was a little perturbed to find that the stones were teardrop shaped, because it's hard (well, more like impossible) to get a Turk's-head to flow around a sharp corner the way it will around a curve. My solution was to just ignore the sharp point.

Amethyst earrings and pendant.
